Our history

In 1949, United Federal Credit Union was founded by five employees at the Whirlpool manufacturing plant in St. Joseph, MI. A part-time volunteer staff ran the credit union from a cash box in the personnel office. From those humble beginnings, the credit union has grown to 35 branches in six states, $3.8 billion in assets, and over 186,000 members.

 

1949 – Founded as Nineteen Hundred Employees Federal Credit Union.

1950 – Became Whirlpool Employees Federal Credit Union.

1958 – Assets of $2 million.

1962 – Moved out of the Whirlpool plant into our first branch. Assets of $4.5 million.

1978 – Branch expands to new location at 2900 S. State St. in St. Joseph, MI.

1987 – Name changes to Whirlpool Community Federal Credit Union.

1991 – Name changes to First Resource Federal Credit Union.

1992 – Land purchased for new headquarters to open in 1993. Assets of $140 million.

2006 – United merges with First Resource Federal Credit Union. United Federal Credit Union is retained as the name of the new institution.

2009 – United acquires Clearstar Financial Credit Union in Reno, NV.

2010 – Assets of $1.2 billion and 100,000 members.

2011 – United acquires Griffith Savings Bank, Griffith, IN.

2012 – Assets grow to over $1.5 billion.

2013 – Named Michigan Credit Union League Outstanding Credit Union of the Year 2013 and National Federal Credit Union of the Year 2013 by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions.

2015 – Opens branch in Springdale, AR.

2016 – Assets of $2 billion and 150,000 members; opens branches in Carson City, NV, and Asheville, NC.

2018 – Opens branches in South Bend/Mishawaka, IN.

2019 – Opens four new branches (Springdale and Rogers, AR; Granger and Mishawaka, IN).

2020 – Assets of $3 billion and 177,000 members; opens new Corporate Headquarters (Team United HQ) at 150 Hilltop Road in St. Joseph, MI.

2021 – United acquires Springdale, AR branch from Truity Credit Union; acquires Edgewater Bank in Southwest Michigan.
